What Is an LLMs File?

An llms.txt file is a small text file that helps AI tools find the most important information on a website.

Think of it as a short guidebook for your website. Instead of making an AI tool search through every menu, image, script and page, the file points it toward useful information such as:

The idea was introduced through the llms.txt proposal.

The Short Answer

An llms.txt file:

  • Is optional.
  • Is not required for a website.
  • Is not currently an official web standard.
  • Does not replace robots.txt.
  • Does not replace an XML sitemap.
  • Does not replace good website content.
  • Does not control whether an AI crawler may enter your website.
  • May help AI agents find and understand important pages more efficiently.
  • Can present important website information in a shorter, cleaner format.

The current proposal describes llms.txt as a way to provide AI-friendly information and links. Google’s Chrome documentation calls it an “emerging convention” and says providing the file is optional. Read the original proposal (opens in a new tab) and Chrome’s explanation (opens in a new tab).

What Does llms.txt Mean?

“LLM” stands for “large language model.”

That is the kind of technology used by AI assistants and answer tools.

The file is named:

llms.txt

It is usually placed at the main address of a website:

https://www.example.com/llms.txt

It can also be placed inside a section of a website:

https://www.example.com/help/llms.txt

When placed inside a section, it can describe the pages located under that part of the website.

A Simple Way to Think About It

Imagine that an AI assistant visits a large salvage yard. Without help, it may have to walk through every building, aisle and storage area to understand what the business offers.

An llms.txt file is like giving the assistant a map that says:

  • Used engines are here.
  • Transmissions are here.
  • Warranty information is here.
  • Shipping information is here.
  • The parts-search page is here.
  • Business information is here.

The map does not replace the salvage yard. It simply points toward the most useful places.

Could It Improve Crawling?

Potentially—but this needs to be explained carefully.

An llms.txt file may help an AI agent locate important content faster because the file provides a short list of useful pages. Chrome’s documentation says agents may spend more time crawling a website when the file is not available.

However, llms.txt is not a search-engine crawling command, and there is no proof that every AI platform will use it or crawl a website more often because it exists.

A better way to say it is:

An llms.txt file may give AI agents a faster, simpler path to a website’s most useful information.

Is llms.txt an Official Web Standard?

No—not at this time.

It is a proposed format and an emerging convention. A growing number of websites and publishing platforms use it, but businesses are not required to have one. GitBook’s guide (opens in a new tab) also describes it as an emerging convention rather than a formal web standard.

A website can still be found, crawled, indexed and mentioned by AI tools without an llms.txt file.

The file should be viewed as a helpful extra—not a requirement.

How Is It Different From Other Website Files?

robots.txt

A robots.txt file tells automated crawlers which areas they may or may not access.

sitemap.xml

A sitemap lists website pages that a search engine may want to discover and index.

Schema Markup

Schema adds structured information to individual webpages. It can identify things such as the business, services, products, reviews, locations and frequently asked questions.

llms.txt

An llms.txt file provides a short introduction to the website and a selected list of useful resources for AI tools and agents.

It is a guide, not an access-control file.

What Goes Inside an llms.txt File?

The file uses Markdown, which is a simple way to organize text. The proposed format can contain:

  1. One main title beginning with #.
  2. A short description beginning with >.
  3. Helpful notes about the business or website.
  4. Sections beginning with ##.
  5. Links to important pages.
  6. A short explanation after each link.
  7. An optional section for information that is less important.

Under the current proposal, the main title is the only required section. The other sections help make the file more useful.

How to Create the File

Step 1: Choose the Most Important Pages

Do not list every page just because it exists.

Start with pages that clearly explain:

  • What the business does
  • What it sells
  • Who it serves
  • Where it operates
  • How to buy or request service
  • Important policies
  • Credentials and trust information
  • How to contact the business

Step 2: Write Short Descriptions

Each link should have a short description explaining what the page contains.

Good:

- [Warranty Information](https://www.example.com/warranty): Review warranty coverage, time limits, exclusions, and claim instructions.

Less helpful:

Step 3: Use Real, Public Pages

Only link to pages that:

  • Work correctly
  • Are available to the public
  • Contain accurate information
  • Can be read without signing in
  • Do not expose private customer or company information

Step 4: Upload the File

The finished file is normally uploaded to:

https://www.yourwebsite.com/llms.txt

Ask a website developer or hosting provider to confirm that the file:

  • Opens in a browser
  • Returns a successful response
  • Is not blocked
  • Contains plain, readable text
  • Uses the correct web address

Step 5: Keep It Updated

Review the file when the business changes:

  • Services
  • Products
  • Locations
  • Hours
  • Policies
  • Credentials
  • Contact information
  • Important website pages

A short, accurate file is better than a long, outdated one.

Should Every Business Add One?

New Best Practice, But Not Required.

A small website with clear pages and simple navigation may already be easy for AI tools to understand.

An llms.txt file may be more useful when a website has:

  • Many services or products
  • A large inventory
  • Detailed policies
  • Several locations
  • Technical documentation
  • Frequently changing information
  • Important resources spread across many pages

For an automotive recycler, the file could provide a clear path to inventory, part requests, warranties, shipping, returns, recall information, facility details and credentials.

What an llms.txt File Cannot Replace

Even when a business chooses to add the file, it still needs:

  • A crawlable website
  • Accurate business information
  • Clear service and product pages
  • Useful customer answers
  • Original evidence and photographs
  • Consistent profiles and listings
  • Legitimate reviews and credentials
  • Strong internal links
  • Updated policies
  • Ongoing AI visibility monitoring

The file summarizes and organizes information. It does not repair missing, inaccurate or weak website content.

Simple Takeaway

An llms.txt file is an optional map for AI tools.

It can organize important business information in one small, easy-to-read place. It may help an AI agent find useful pages faster and use less unnecessary information.

It is not required, and it is not yet an official web standard. Businesses should treat it as one possible part of a larger AI visibility program.
